Job Summary
Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine invites applications for an open rank faculty position on Diversity, Inclusion, and Societal Hierarchies within the Department of Medical Education The ideal candidate for this position will have a body of work that portrays an interest in and scholarly track record around issues of inclusion, institutional stigmatization, societal hierarchies, structural oppression and anti-racism and anti-oppression, theories, pedagogies, practices, and programming that facilitates (1) the creation and presentation of DEI educational initiatives for students, staff, and under graduate medical faculty; (2) critical thinking around histories of marginalized groups in the U.S. and how issues of power and status interact; and (3) the advancement of scholarly research. This positions duties are focused in two areas: 1) 60% of the time is dedicated to leading a team assembled by the office of the Associate Dean of Inclusion, Equity, and Community Engagement that will provide guidance, leadership and critical inquiry on scholarship, current issues, and programming and practices appropriate to support GCSOM mission and vision for inclusion, equity, and community engagement 2) 40% of the time is dedicated to working closely with the Office of Student Affairs to facilitate student advocacy, mentoring, and advising along with student activities and special events consistent with GCSOM mission and vision for inclusion, equity, and community engagement This position works under the direction of the Associate Dean of Inclusion, Equity, and Community Engagement for their assigned duties in these areas.
Job Duties
Create and deliver courses designed to develop a critical analysis of issues of inclusion, societal hierarchies, social differences, systemic forms of inequality and underlying structures of power and how they operate to create disproportionate impacts on underrepresented and/or marginalized peoples and communities.
Conduct literature reviews for peer reviewed and practice based, gray literature that informs pedagogy, research, practices and/or policy initiatives addressing the social and health issues of underrepresented and diverse groups.
Demonstrate competency and incorporate research-based evidence that supports pedagogy, practices, and programming to include any of the following areas: social stratification, race and ethnicity, inequality, social change and social movements, social policy, social theory, and critical theory.
Monitor, identify and examine issues and trends affecting campus climate; make recommendations for educational programming and initiatives.
Develop and deliver small- and large-scale innovative trainings and programs that focus on inclusion, societal hierarchies, structural oppression, and marginalized groups.
Initiate and participate in efforts to develop tools and measures to evaluate and report on the effectiveness of programs and educational materials.
Facilitate guidance to student groups and organizations that support a diverse student population.
Serve as a point of contact for internal requests for educational programs and coordinate with Student Affairs to maintain an internal database to assist with specialized trainings, presentations, or events.
Enhance collaborations with colleagues in other units across the organization, as well as with a variety of external, community-based partnership and stakeholders to ensure coherence and mutual reinforcement of educational initiatives as they fit into advancing the university's overall diversity, equity, and inclusion goals, strategy, and approach.
Other educational duties and responsibilities including service on committees assigned by the Chair of the Department of Medical Education in consultation with the Associate Dean of Inclusion, Equity, and Community Engagement.

Position Details
Required Experience:
A terminal degree (Ph.D. or MD or equivalent).in higher education, social justice education, anthropology, public health, sociology, or a related field
Track record or evidence of potential for scholarship in area of expertise.
1-3 years of teaching experience in higher education or medical education comporting with rank.
Related academic and scholarly experience with issues around inclusion, systemic discrimination, societal hierarchies, social status or any other related area of content in a university or medical school setting is required.
Preferred Experience
Contemporary knowledge of current events, political contexts, and socioeconomic issues that shape and influence inclusion and the interpretation of social status.
Demonstrated experience in how to incorporate community-based activities, research and external partnerships into pedagogical efforts and classroom experiences.
An understanding of the value of student activities and of the motivations of students who participate in them.
Strong skills in communication and dynamic and compelling speaking and writing skills with an ability to inspire others toward excellence.

Your writing sample must be a peer reviewed publication that covers any of these topics or related areas of inquiry: Issues of racism and anti-racism as they relate to place and time; racism in medicine/healthcare; LGTBQ experiences; intersectionality across populations experiencing oppression; racial and spatial segregation, anti-blackness and white supremacy, discrimination in land use law and housing, policing and the criminal justice system, environmental justice, or community organizing and power.
Requirements for the Diversity Statement
Please write a statement of not more than three pages, single spaced that describes (1) your experiences across your life course or generationally with inclusion. The experiences may be both personal and academic. Next, (2) describe a challenge that you have faced and overcome which may be personal and/or academic. Last, (3) comment on the pros and cons of a colorblind society and revisions to Dr. Martin Luther King's legacy. Citations may be incorporated to support point number three.
