Registered Nurse - Sexual Health: Prevention and Screening
Reporting to the Public Health Nurse Manager, the Register Nurse for Prevention and Screening counsels and educates clients/patients about HIV and STD testing including; HIV, viral hepatitis, syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea and other sexually transmitted infections, primarily within Fenway Health locations. Additional testing locations may include AIDS Action/Green Street, various rotating sites at other Community-Based Organizations, and possible Health Vans. In addition to counseling and risk reduction, the Registered Nurse provides screening, testing and treatment as defined by public health guidelines and under supervision of Fenway Health medical providers.
Screens callers, walk-in clients, and those at medical appointments by assessing relative risk for HIV/STI and viral hepatitis exposure to determine individual need for testing and type of testing
Assist with navigatong to health services
Provides pre/post test counseling and education to those seeking HIV/STI and hepatitis testing; conducts the requisite sample collection in the form of urine samples, swabs, and serum under standing orders of the supervising physician.
Supports the Health Navigators in team-wide initiatives such as community-based testing events, outreach, and community education
Coordinates referrals with mental health and medical providers to provide quality care and a seamless continuum of services
Ensures a safe environment for the delivery of care in collaboration with the Medical Department and The Fenway Institute
Attends continuing education seminars, staff in-services and reads current relevant periodicals in order to maintain familiarity with trends in infectious diseases and nursing licensure
Processes, stores, and ships laboratory specimens, completing required paperwork and ensuring timely and accurate data and sample submissions
Distributes tests results to patients and providers, where appropriate
Maintains relationships with city, state and other agency staff performing related work
Completes point-of-care laboratory tests, including required quality control
Maintains clinical equipment per manufacture and protocol requirements

Current Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Massachusetts
Current BLS CPR certification required
Associates degree or higher; BSN preferred
Demonstrated computer skills (Microsoft Outlook and Word) and EMR systems
Experience working in community/primary care practice settings, with HIV/AIDS education or prevention experience strongly preferred
Comfortable in a practice environment/culture that promotes ongoing process improvement
Strong customer service and problem solving skills, demonstrated critical thinking skills, quick learner, self-motivator, and ability to troubleshoot
Exceptional organizational and time management skills; ability to organize time and priorities effectively, asking for direction when appropriate
Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations, including LGBT clients
Demonstrated ability to work in semi-autonomous scenarios with initiative and a desire to learn and develop new skills and improved methods for completing work
Ability to work harmoniously with diverse groups of individuals and communities at risk for HIV-- specifically men who have sex with men and transgender people
Strong ability to manage clinically and emotionally challenging situations with utmost professionalism, care and discretion
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to provide precise, well-written documentation
Willingness and ability to perform phlebotomy, with prior competence a plus
